Does Acupuncture Hurt?
This is one of the most common questions I get asked: Does Acupuncture Hurt?
And I understand — most are not a fan of needles. At least, when getting an injection or have blood drawn. (In fact, when I was seven, I fought the nurse so hard they gave up that year on getting a finger prick for blood. :-))
Acupuncture is different.
For most people, acupuncture is far more comfortable than they expect. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin — about the width of a human hair — and are very different from injection needles used in medical procedures.
Most patients feel little or no discomfort when a needle is inserted.
What acupuncture actually feels like
Instead of pain, patients often notice sensations such as:
warmth
heaviness
tingling
mild pressure
a spreading or relaxing sensation
In traditional Chinese medicine this response is sometimes described as “De Qi,” which simply means the body has responded to the acupuncture point.
Why acupuncture needles don’t hurt like injections
Injection needles are designed to deliver fluid and must pierce tissue quickly. Acupuncture needles are solid and extremely thin, which allows them to slide gently between tissue fibers rather than cutting through them.
Because of this design, acupuncture is generally much more comfortable than procedures involving medical injections.
Many patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing
Once the needles are placed, many patients report feeling calm, relaxed, or even sleepy during treatment. This may occur because acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system and reduce stress signaling in the body.
The bottom line
Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. While individual sensitivity varies, many patients find treatment relaxing and comfortable.
